Are Storm Doors Necessary?

Storm doors are usually purchased to provide an additional layer of insulation and to protect your primary door from the elements like rain, ice, snow and wind. In the long run it can also save you money on maintenance costs.

Storm doors are not necessary if you have a new, well insulated, energy efficient door that is covered from the elements by a porch.

They may be a great investment if you have an older door that still is in great shape but is not insulated and lets in a draft. It adds an additional layer of insulation.

Some storm doors come with a lock which adds another layer of protection.

Cons to storm doors:

1. If you have a wood door that faces the sun, your storm door can hold in the heat and warp your door. This can be prevented by purchasing a storm door that is ventilated.

2. Aesthetics - The storm door can cover your beautiful primary door.
